Should You Offer to Work for Free to Gain Experience?

This topic is sensitive. Working for free is not ideal. Everyone deserves fair pay.
But if you are struggling to get your first opportunity, and you can afford it for a short period, offering a limited unpaid internship can be a strategic move.
The key word is limited.
You are not offering free labour forever. You are offering a short trial period — for example, one to three months — to prove your value and gain real experience.
Here is how to approach it properly.
First, target the right organisation. Choose a company in the exact industry where you want to grow. The experience must be relevant to your long-term goals.
Second, be clear and professional. You can say: "I am looking to build hands-on experience in this field. I am willing to support your team for a limited period to learn and contribute. If I prove valuable, I would appreciate being considered for a paid role in future."
This shows confidence, not desperation.
Third, set a time boundary. Agree in advance on how long the internship will last. For example, eight weeks. At the end of that period, there should be a review conversation.
Two outcomes are possible: They hire you because you have already proven yourself. Or you leave with real experience, references, and practical skills to strengthen your next application.
During the internship, treat it seriously. Be reliable. Be proactive. Ask for feedback. Deliver real value.
However, do not accept exploitation. If there is no learning, no structure, and no respect, leave.
This approach is not for everyone. Only do it if you can manage financially.
If you choose this path, identify one company this week and prepare a professional message offering a short, structured internship. Be strategic. Use the experience to build momentum.
